Letter to the Administrator

Dear Administrator:

The Maine Association of School Libraries and the Maine State Library are pleased to present this "packet" with a system and tools for evaluating School Library Media Specialists (LMS) in a four-step process.  The goal is two-fold.  First, the process allows the LMS to reflect on her/his duties and responsibilities and to set goals.  Secondly, it provides LMS supervisors with a tool and a process by which to conduct an evaluation.

The packet contains the following:

The preparation tools are based on the LMS job description which is divided into the three roles of the school librarian:  1. Leader, planner, manager; 2. Teacher; 3. Instructional leader.  The LMS job description covers a broad spectrum of grade-level groupings and a variety of responsibilities — from handling one library to district-wide supervision.  Indicators within the preparation tool provide checkpoints within each role.  Some indicators may not apply to your specific educational setting and should be modified as needed.  The indicators are measured by a rubric which is repeated on each page.  (The LMS's preparation tool includes examples of each indicator to encourage the reflection process.  Documentation is encouraged to provide evidence of meeting indicators.)  After the pages are printed out, use the back as space for reflective notation.  The ensuing supervisor/librarian conference is based on these shared notes.  A model action plan and final summative evaluation with its commendations and recommendations are included as a reference.

This systematic approach is realized through a four-step process.
