. InfoNet PROMO:
"Doing research? Just curious about something? Have a child doing homework? Trying to prove a point? Bored? Visit: http://libraries.maine.edu/mainedatabases to access a searchable collection of online magazines, newspapers, journals, dictionaries, encyclopedias and images that can be accessed electronically via the Internet. This site provides access to almost ten million articles in more than 3000 journals, magazines and newspapers. Funded by a variety of sources, these are available through a cooperative licensing agreement negotiated by the Maine State Library, and the University of Maine System. Any computer with Internet connectivity can access this site. Try it; you'll be amazed! " (Molly Larson. Bangor P.L.)

NoveList: A number of requests have appeared on this list since Sept. asking for book titles for YA's and children on particular themes, topics, etc. Because of this, EBSCO has offered us a free trial of NoveList K-8 (see note below). This free trial will last through June 03. Given the current state budget situation there is no assurance that we will be able to purchase this subscription after June 03. I have heard many compliments about NoveList from public librarians. I hope that children's librarians, school librarians, and all who work with K-8 will find this new list a useful joy.

New Media Catalog
The videotape catalog from Learning & Technology Services (formerly Media Services) is now available to view and print online: http://www.state.me.us/msl/media.htm Please be aware that this is not a searchable site. The page does include the entire catalog, a list of new programs, programs to be removed and order forms that can be viewed and/or printed. Please note that we will not be sending a new catalog this year. If you need a new catalog, please consider printing one out online or use last years catalog and print out the list of new and removed videos. If you are not able to do that, please email me and I will send out a new one . We are hoping that this will work best for everyone. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact Felicia.Kennedy@state.me.us or Lev Sherman.

Sad News: Ernie Bradbury passed away April 12 at his home in Auburn. Anyone wishing to remember Ernie may make a donation to the Building Fund of the Auburn Public Library. A contribution to the MASL scholarship fund would also be appropriate.

And for those of you who never enjoyed a bit of banter with Ernie let me add that he was MEMA's (MASL now) first President in 1974 and served the profession in many different ways during his long and interesting career as a Library Media Specialist. Ernie worked in the Auburn, York, Belfast and Augusta school systems as I recollect, probably a couple of others too. He also worked overseas in American schools attached to military bases and spent a couple of year teaching English in Poland where he nurtured wonderful relationships with students and friends that led to his sponsorship of several Polish students while they were studying here in Maine. But most of all Ernie loved children, he put them first always. They knew it and they adored him because of it (Edna Mae Comstock).

Subject: Re:
laptops and libraries: concerns

So glad you have noted the problem.

Our discussion at the Sunday morning Spring Conference MASL meeting echoed some of your points.

At this time MLTI has no money to provide laptops to librarians, guidance counselors, technology coordinators, Ed Techs, or principals.

We are asking that all librarians, who do not have access to a leased laptop, make a contact with the MLTI Lead Teacher in your district. Offering to do some of the training will be a welcome relief. They are just beginning to discover that their responsibilities are endless.

The laptops include World Book. Librarians are the best choice to teach students and teachers how to use this item - without plagiarism! Searching the Internet is a great second teaching item. Using the EBSCo database makes a third lesson. By the time you get these three covered, the Lead teacher will welcome you with open arms to do anything else.

While MASL is doing what it can to address the problem, you can be a great advocate at your local level. Please watch for any reference to "skip the library" and address it. Pass the word on through MeLibs what you are seeing and how you handled it. We can all learn from each other.

For instance: I wrote a letter to the Lewiston paper, and from their reply to me, it may get published. As soon as it does, I will forward it to MeLibs for those who do not see the Lewiston paper.

Thank you for your comments on the topic.
