Inviolable by Naomi Kirk-Lawlor

A library is a sacred place

In an America made of strip malls,
ethnocentricity,
television infomercials,
cigarettes,
and  guns

It is amazing
that anyone who cares to
can have
free, uncensored access
to the knowledge,
the stories, and
the wisdom of the world.

Just for being alive.

But while libraries to most of us resemble
the view from the top
of the Empire State Building
on a cloudless day,

to some they seem more like
small hidden windows that haven't
seen windex in decades.

Perhaps if those boys had spent more time
in the very place
they chose to end
themselves,
they might have found
someone else to lead them.

Libraries are like little drops
of magic
scattered across our country.

They should be inviolable.

Naomi, a Maine high school student, wrote this after the
tragedy at Columbine High School, CO.
