The first wave of the technology revolution brought with it an information revolution that has transformed both school libraries and the role of school librarians. The successful school library program now must include the skillful use of appropriate technology. This is evident in the new Information Power, in the recently updated Guidelines for School Library Facilities, and in the day-to-day management of any well-run school library.
School library programs now must help develop both information literate and technology literate students. If we compare the performance indicators of the Nine Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning published by AASL and AECT, with the Technology Foundation Standards for All Students from ISTE, we can easily see that information literacy and technology literacy go hand in hand.
Technology presents an enormous challenge to school librarians.. Staying on the cutting edge and making informed decisions about the purchase of new and appropriate technology is only one challenge. Learning to make good use of these technologies and then helping others to use them well demand even greater resourcefulness.
