June 24 - 28 (Tuesday - Saturday) We were able to change the dates a little to accommodate all the snow days, but this is truly the only week all summer that our staff can do it.

As always, we focus on strategies for integrating technology with teaching and learning in schools. The conference is appropriate for teachers, school library media specialists, curriculum directors, computer coordinators, integrators and administrators. Indeed, any educator interested in deep learning integrating technology would benefit from this week.

    GREAT for tech novice HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS

    EDT 520 - Technology in K-12 Schools

    This course is an introduction to many types of technologies available to educators and students in the K-12 environment. Participants will have a lot of hands and minds on activities throughout the semester. Some of the topics to be covered are basic computer desktop management, cool ideas for using the Word Processor, digital video, NoteShare, web site creation and much, much more.

    EDT 598 Sec 666 Teaching with Technology (CRN 39011)

      DESCRIPTION: Introductory level course for teachers who currently use little or no technology and for teachers who want to brush up on technology skills.  Participants will explore a variety of techniques and online resources that will enable them to create technology-rich lessons for their students while improving their own overall skills and confidence level.  Work will be project based and subject based (i.e. math, science, reading) for individual classroom settings.

    Explores in depth, information security, identity theft and safe online access for schools. Participants will investigate the relationship of security to education and the delivery of technology in the classroom.

      DESCRIPTION: Examines the role of Free and Open Source (FOSS) software in K-12 education. Participants will investigate the Zeitgeist and popular open source software to gain an understanding of how FOSS can benefit schools.

    ONLINE - EDT 598 Sec 990 Foundations of Distance Education (CRN: 37299, 37300)

    Serves as an introduction to distance education, as both a delivery mechanism and as an academic field.  It is intended to provide students with the opportunity to become familiar with the philosophies, strategies, and techniques involved in teaching outside of a face-to-face environment.  The historical, present, and future practices of communication in distance teaching, including the application of available technologies, will be discussed.  Students will have the opportunity to adapt and/or develop content for courses online.  Ultimately, students will be responsible for developing their own online mini course using Moodle.  There will be a choice of focus on distance education for adult learners in higher education or on students in K-12 settings.  The course will be offered on Moodle.

    "Presents some hypermedia tools for Macintosh and / or PC platforms. Emphasizes writing code for hypermedia applications. Prerequisite: EDT 520 or permission." In this course we will use several hypermedia applications but primarily we'll look closely at two popular ones: Power Point and MicroWorlds. 3 graduate credits.

    This class is an in depth video production class covering all aspects of video production. Participants will cover alternative lighting, camera positions, cuts, audio tools and proper audio selection as well as several software titles for use in developing a variety of video projects during the course of the class.

    F2F - EDT 598 Section 002 Educational Gaming and Simulations (new course) (CRN: 37280)

    Description: This course uses a hands-on approach to explore the theories of educational gaming, and the practical aspects of evaluating and implementing games, simulations, and virtual environments for teaching and learning. We will examine how educators can leverage students’ interests in digital culture to extend their learning and keep them engaged. Participants will explore the foundational, social and cultural implications of these new media.

      DESCRIPTION: This introductory course will cover content creation for modern web development using easily available resource.   Students can expect to do video & audio Podcasting movie making, Noteshare notebook creation, and explore how tried and true technology like blogs and wikis are changing the face of the interactive web.  The class talks about information security and how it relates to the classroom in the new virtual learning environments, as well as emerging web 2.0 technologies.

University of Maine at Augusta Library and Information Technology Degrees

UMA offers two degrees and a certificate in Library and Information Science (previously known as Library and Information Technology.)

  • The Certificate Program is intended for people wishing to take only library science courses with no expectation of earning a degree in L&IS. The purpose of the Associate of Science in L&IS is to prepare individuals for immediate entry into positions that support library and information service professionals and to upgrade skills of staff who are presently working in school, public, academic and special libraries and other information intensive positions and organizations.
  • The Bachelor of Science in L&IS provides students the opportunity to develop specialized technological skills and to increase their creative and critical thinking abilities. Students completing the BS in L&IS will be prepared to enter the field of library and information technology as specialized paraprofessionals, able to work independently in many settings.

  • Distant Learning Opportunities

    Distance Learning Opportunities are available through the USC College of Library and Information Science

    • The 36 credit hour MLIS degree consists of six required courses and six electives. The program will run for four years and will be transmitted by live, interactive television to EdNET viewing sites in Maine. Most on site meetings will be held at University of Maine at Augusta.
  • International Society for Technology Education:

    School library media specialists play a pivotal role in instructional technology. To support library media specialists in their role as technology leaders we want to form an ISTE SIG for media specialists (SIGMS).
  • The purpose of SIGMS will be to provide a place for school library media specialists to gather and learn about technologies which improve the operation of the school library media center, increase access, and create a more effective and efficient working environment. SIGMS would host an e-mail list, as well as, an annual meeting at NECC
  • If you would be interested in joining a SIG for media specialists, please reply to me at Sally.Brewer@mso.umt.edu

    We need 15 interested members to apply to the ISTE Board to consider a new SIG. Hopefully we will meet in Seattle next June!

  • What is ATM?

    The College of Education and Human Development ATM facility at the University of Maine is part of the "Maine Distance Learning Project." The Maine Distance Learning Project has created a network of schools that are connected via ATM - this network is ever-evolving, and as of October, 2001 it consists of over 50 sites at various stages of deployment. These sites are geographically spread throughout the state, and allow educators and students an opportunity to share ideas, thoughts and experiences that distance might otherwise prohibit. http://www.mainedistancelearningproject.org/
