Travel log to see E.B. White's House con'd
Greta thought the Circle of Friends Garden was going to be a big garden with many sculptures of Stuart Little and his car and stuff like that, but
actually they were just starting to make it, and it was mostly bushes. It was in memory of EB White: a circle of stones with benches in it and a garden around the stones.
Ms. Volnick gave us a copy of a delightful article that she had written about The Whites and the Friend Public Library. She was wonderful and showed us around the library and told us where E. B. White used to live. But she warned us that it was a private house now and not the museum we thought. Also, the fair in Charlotte's Web is based on the Blue Hill Fair, so we were thinking that we might go to the Blue Hill Fair, and maybe take some pictures.
After purchasing film, we turned the car back towards the spot we had picked for lunch. Suddenly it occurred to Mrs. Garthwait the Brooklin cemetry might yeild some information. "Do you want to stop?" she quickly called. A chorus of "YESes!!" encouraged the car to turn right into the parking lot next to the cemetery.
The five us began to wander around the cemetery. We couldn't decide on a search strategy so Emma and Hazel ran back to the library to find out exactly where it was. If we hadn't come back to the center of town to get more film, we would not have thought of looking in the cemetery for the graves. Lauren remembered that Katharine had asked for her grave to go under an oak tree or some sort of tree. We know now it was an oak tree. If Lauren hadn't remembered about the oak tree Greta thinks they might have given up and not tried so hard to find it. It was way in the back so it was hard to find.
LUNCH:
We walked out on to the expanse of rock stretching miles out from the shore. (I know I am exaggerating - it wasn't THAT far but hey that's what makes a good story.) As we were walking we came to the conclusion that we did not want to sit on those rocks. By the time we came to the end of the rocks we had come to a most definite conclusion that we would not sit on those rocks. The flock of sea gulls that had just recently flew (and floated) away as we approached left us some gifts that were scattered all over the rocks. We did not care for these gifts so we started looking for another place to sit down and eat lunch. Then one of us spotted a small island far out at sea. (It was only a few feet away and only a small outcrop of rocks but it was free of bird gifts.) In our desperate situation we jumped into the freezing cold water and swam across the wide expanse to the island. (Actually we only had to wade through a few inches of water but I did not exaggerate on the temperature of the water. I was being quite truthful on that point.) When we got to the island we sat down and began to eat. We were entertained by a loon in the water swimming back and forth with it's baby on its back.
Personally, I think that it wanted a share of our yummy lunch so it was sticking around until we moved on and left it tasty tidbits. While we were eating our lunch we kept looking at the water all around us. Then we looked off an edge and hiding in the water starring up at us were three cannibals! Aaaaahhhhh! The cannibals were shaking their giant spears at us menacingly. (Of course our sensible colleagues want me to point out to you that there were no cannibals on the ledge. There was just three harmless crabs going about their business not paying any attention to us. But I am trying to make this story interesting so to me there were three cannibals.) Then one of us noticed that the water had risen at a surprising rate and the water was now about five inches higher than when we had crossed before. So we decided to cross back over to the rocks. One of us taking her last step to reach solid ground slipped on the rock and fell getting her pants soaked in the process. When we had all crossed over the one of us that slipped borrowed some shorts from one of us who was nice enough to lend them to her and smart enough to bring them. Then we went to the falls.
At the falls, there were people kayaking, and they weren't moving anywhere, because they were trying to go against the current, but rocks were causing an interesting counter-current and water was spraying. It looked neat. Back to S.A.M.M. homepage.
