Travel Log for Barbara Cooney
This is the story of our trip to Damariscotta last fall to see where Mrs. Cooney is living. We started out, as usual, riding in Mrs. Garthwait's car. But this time it was her new red one. As usual we were going to stop to get drinks later. I (being Greta) started to feel sick (again). "Uh, O," said all the others. They knew what was going to happen, and I bet you do too. Luckily we were near a gas station. I'm sorry her car was new. Also on our way to Damariscotta we stopped at the Periwinkle Cafe. A wonderful little bakery shop. Mrs. Garthwait ate some Death By Chocolate (don't worry, she isn't dead). Hazel had a fudge brownie, Lauren, Emma, and Greta don't remember what they got but Greta wanted a pumpkin pie that was still in the oven. All the food was D-licious! In the car we sang songs. Soon we were there. Once we arrived, we decided to look to see if we could find where there was this scene we saw in Miss. Rumphius. (Be sure to look at the pictures of the REAL Damariscotta!) We walked all over the place, and my legs got absolutely tired. There was this absolutely nice innkeeperlady, and she let us park in her absolutely nice driveway.
Then we absolutely had to go to this bookstore. It was in the town across the bridge. We bought the book Eleanor (The absolutly nice bookstore lady sent us a Barbara Cooney brochure later.) She also told us that Mrs. Cooney's husband wasn't feeling well and that they probably weren't up for company. So we didn't get a chance to meet her. On our way back we played Pooh-sticks. (You can see the veiw of the bridge on the picture on the left.) It was really fun. You see, you drop sticks ......Well, you can read it in any Winnie the Pooh book. We got back to the car and drove this really bumpy road to Round Pond. We went there because we thought Alice Rumphius in Barbara Cooney's bookMiss. Rumphius lived around there. We saw places that looked like the pictures in the book. We drove around and around (and around!) to find a place to eat lunch. There was the strangest thing going on there. You see, people there would name their driveways just like streets, so we got really confused. We went down to the wharfs that smelled awfully like dead fish. (YUCK!) There were too many people there. ( plus, it smelled!) Finally we found a place by the ocean to stop and have lunch. We had a good lunch, but there were a lot of ants. We fed them our crumbs. Near the end of our meal some wasps came after our drinks. We made a daring escape. We saw this tiny little one room cottage, and it was really ensy-weensy.
Then we got in the car, took one last look at the sea, and drove home into the sunset.
