Maine Samplers Part III BELIEFS ABOUT EDUCATION |
||||||||
|
1. We believe that learning should be more active than passive.
2. We believe that intrinsic motivation is more powerful than extrinsic. Tasks to be evaluated should be meaningful beyond mere instruction or evaluation. Students have more choices.
3. We believe in individualizing pacing and growth, and recognize that there are several different ways of learning.
4. We believe that education should include group skills, peer teaching and collaborative products.
5. We believe in the integration of knowledge. Student understanding of the "whole" is better than the sum of its parts. In upper grades, team teaching units across subjects is becoming widespread.
6. We believe that "process" should be measured as well as products or "outcomes." Stress should be placed on application of skills and strategies rather than on specific knowledge.
7. We believe that portfolios offer more depth than standardized tests. A whole body of work
8. We believe that student self-assessment is a valuable tool for growth which also builds fromstudents' intrinsic motivation. Teachers are not keeping students in the dark about criteria for evaluation and assessment standards but are developing these jointly from the start.
9. We believe that assessment drives curriculum.
10. We believe that greater accountability to the parents, community, and student is necessary.
