Visual Representation of 1865-1900

Assignment and two assessment tools prepared by Marilyn Joyce and Alice Thomas of Brewer High School

Note: This project was completed once as a High School History project. The educators involved planned to present the model posters the next time and also expect to include the art teacher in the project.

Assignment

You need to decide the important trends, changes and varied aspects of American growth from 1865-1900. Once you have determined what you want to represent in pictures and words (maybe even numbers), you need to find the appropriate pictures. These representations need to be visually organized.

You need to include economic, political, and social aspects of American life. You should have a variety of people and things. You need both rural and urban life (remember to include a local picture).

The actual presentation is your creative choice. My limited imagination can think of the following: a puzzle, an organized collage, a timeline, pop-up art (difficult but impressive), a pie graph, a flip chart......

70% of your grade comes from the presentation. The journal comprises 30% of the grade. The journal will be written in every time you work on this project. (Include your name, date, and the beginning and ending times on all your journal entries.) It will include and will be graded according to the following checklist. Use this checklist as a journal aid. Place brackets and the appropriate number next to the parts of your journal that show each of the following:

Journal Checklist

1. What you actually did during the time. Make sure you have included enough of an explanation.

2. What you learned. This learning needs to be connected to personal or classroom experiences.

3. Why you made your choice of pictures. You need to justify your choices in a way that is convincing to the reader (ME).

4. Why you chose your method of organization and presentation You need to include your thoughts as you made your decision and a justification for your final choice.
