Jessica has auburn hair, except for a prominent streak of white. Where did the streak come from? For that matter, what genetic factors determine hair coloring? Jessica reads about the role heredity plays and quickly realizes she needs some background information on the basic laws of genetics. I suggest she read about Gregor mendel and his research . Unable to go to the library, Jessica decides to read about Mendel's Laws in her home encyclopedia. She writes in her learning log: "I partly do not rely on this source because the copyright of this World Book is 1959." Later she compares the information with the material in the library's new Encyclopedia Americana and concludes: "Based on how two books have stated the same thing I can trust the information to be factual." I write a note in Jessica's learning log praising her for demonstrating the following information skills from the scope and sequence chart: "The student will be able to evaluate resources for currency of information." Then I check off this skill on the skills chart found at the end of this article.
