Maine Samplers Part III BELIEFS ABOUT EDUCATION |
|||||||||
|
10. We believe that greater accountability to the parents, community, and student is necessary.
Education should focus on common school-wide goals. WHAT THIS MEANS FOR LIBRARIANS
10. Educators need to spend time and energy discussing and developing common school goals. Grades and other evaluations should have meaning across and between classes.
WHAT ASSESSMENT MIGHT LOOK LIKE
10. Besides establishing clear goals and objectives that reflect common school-wide goals and devising valid tools and strategies for assessing student progress, librarians must use every available opportunity to share this information skills curriculum with students, faculty, administrators, school board members, parents and other members of the community. You might want to use a school workshop day to conduct a presentation on your information skills program and ask for feedback from faculty and staff. Include your teaching partners in the presentation. You might also conduct presentations for the PTA and workshops for members of the school board. Writing is another powerful tool. Write a column for your local newspaper or create a newsletter for parents. While this work is time consuming, it communicates the value and importance of the information skills curriculum, which includes assessment and protects library programs at budget time.
