Visit by Kevin Hawkes

 ksigning.JPG

Kevin Hawkes shared his artistic talent and inspiration with Maine children a while ago.  A collaborative effort  by school and public librarians in Old Town and Orono made one such visit possible. Kevin visited schools in the Old Town and Orono area as well as The Store/Ampersand in Orono for a booksigning.

During his presentations Kevin explained the process of illustrating a book. He demonstrated how he bridged from reading the manuscript to sketching ideas, creating the "dummy" book, to the finished paintings and stages of printing, including the color separation process. His humorous stories from life on Peaks Island captivated the students' imaginations. Drawing spontaneously with marker on newsprint, Hawkes engaged the children in his illustration technique, focusing on feeling, motion and shadows.

When questioned by third graders on how he learned to draw so well and where he gets his ideas, Kevin responded, "To learn how to draw you practice drawing.

"When you want to develop your imagination, read, read, read."
