Adaptor Grant Opportunities

for Maine School Libraries to Support Evidence-Based Practice  

To be eligible, the school library must:

* be part of a public or private primary, elementary, middle, junior high or high school in the state of Maine;

* have a certified School Library Media Specialist (LMS) who is a member of MASL;

* and the librarian must consent to participate in a poster session about her/his project at the 2006 Maine Libraries Conference.  (In the poster session, each adaptort grant winner will create a visual display about his/her adapted project.  Conferences attendees will walk around and look at displays, asking questions on a one-on-one basis.)

MASL is offering four (4) $500 adaptor grants to Maine school libraries to support evidence-based practice that is based on one of the following winning evidence-based practice projects from last year: 

"Listen! *And Become a Better Reader" by Ellen Spring from Rockland District Middle School.

Providing and promoting audio books with accompanying print books and CD/cassette players to students. 

Evidence of student learning: Circulation figures, surveys, literature logs and reading test scores. 

Collaborating teachers: two special education teachers, one ESL teacher and an 8th grade English teacher. 

 

"Messalonskee Reads." by Jodi Breau of Messalonskee High School

A reading club was formed to eat lunch and read together once a week for 45 minutes in order to increase student awareness of the variety of available young adult literature.

Evidence of student learning: products, surveys, and adult observations.

Collaborating teachers: one English teacher. 

Seventh grade disease unit by Peggy Becksvoort from Falmouth Middle School

Students researched diseases and produced a product showing their understanding of a disease. Then, they chose a fiction book or a biography. and evaluated the author's accuracy in the presentation of the disease based on their own research.

Evidence of student learning: book evaluations

Collaborating teachers: one science teacher and one English language arts teacher 

 

Famous Maine person unit by Susan Trott from Chelsea School

Each student researched a famous Maine person, wrote a report and did a presentation dressed in costume.

Evidence of student learning: videotaped presentations  

Collaborating teacher: one fourth grade teacher  

 

Project on Native American History and Culture by Judy Wentzell from Adams Elementary School

Students will do a week's worth of activities looking at past and contemporary  Native Americans, including a guest speaker - a high school or college level Native American - for a day.

Collaborating teacher: one 4/5 grade teacher

Evidence of student learning: Student journals and written products  

 

In one typed page (of no more than 500 words) ... Describe how you will adapt the above project with a focus on evidence of student learning, which can be different from the evidence collected in the original project.  You must include at least one method (survey, checklist, rubric, conference, journal, video, etc) of gathering evidence showing how your adapted project or program impacts teaching and learning.  

On a separate page, submit your proposed budget.  Do not exceed $500.  

 

Applications must be received by 4:00 pm Friday November 4, 2005.
