Introductions.
Secretary's Report (Joyce Lucas): Jan. 23rd minutes. Held off voting until people have a chance to read them.
Treasurer's Report (Donna Chale): Jan. 23rd report.
- Thank you note from the Maine Student Book Award Committee. Covers grades 4-8 and asked for 500.00.
- Also paid a scholarship to Megan Blackmoor.
- Asked what to do with old documents.
- The treasurer's report was accepted as presented.
Chickadee Award (Mary Hazelton): Mary spoke about what the committee does and how their funds are spent: website domain, stickers, logo work, booklet (may not be produced anymore because all of the info. is on the website). Interested in being “more on our minds” and get more publicity this year. They are also looking for new members. Had around 14,000 kids vote last year. Seem to be growing by 1000 to 1500 per year. Deadline is April 1st for this year. Spend a lot of time on book recommendations. Peggy asked what we can do? 1. Make link on MASL website more visible. 2. MEA would be a good contact. Edna offered some historical info on MASL/Chickadee relationship. Discussed our need to set policy in regards to vendor/informational tables.
Google Groups (Edna): encouraged us to use Google Groups instead of Documents as many can't use Google Docs in their schools.
Digital Literacy (Eileen Broderick)
- Maine Professional Development Collaborative: Internet Reciprical Teaching, Developing Online Learning and Comprehension Skills. Betty Manchester's group on technology met for a session on this and Eileen was asked to attend by her superintendent. Donald Leu from Uconn. Spoke. Group formed by BM and had educators from across Maine to work on educational technology. Trying to get a big grant for Maine and Eileen feels we should be involved. Gave handouts (also on Uconn. New Literacies website). Internet Morning Message of the Day Project Handout. YoLinks – color codes words related to your search.
- UMF Dine and discuss. Talked about tech. And got the idea of having two browser options (student and teacher.) EPals – students exchange emails about books.
Handbook Handouts (Debbie Gahm)
- Will bring them to spring fling and brought a few to this meeting to be distributed.
- Grants. Received a check for $17,000.00 from the Steven and Tabitha King Foundation. Will need updates.
Website on L4L (Cindy Petherbridge)
Showed her website and is looking for input. There is a link to websites that are resources. Hoping that people will start sharing. There is a spot for a blog. How do we make this what they need? Not a lot published for librarians. Should get direction after hearing Sue Ballard.
Library Snapshot (Janet Patterson)
- Letter sent to everyone on Feb. 9th, located in Google Docs under files. Looking for feedback. Suggestion to emphasize “all libraries.”
- School library certification. Has copy on Google Groups. Asked if we should post it to the website as a resource for support staff? Sylvia clarified that it is “authorization” rather than “certification.” (see agenda)
Asides:
- Jeff has drafted a policy on conference.
- Peggy read note from Debbie thanking for the SLMS Award.
Spring Fling
- Peggy heard from Sue Ballard and was given a price of $500-750.00.
- MSBA (Barbara Reismeier). This is an informational display rather than a for-profit thing. Debbie made a motion to offer each informational org. up to 2 meal tickets as a one time only situation. This will include up to 2 chairs and 1 6-8 ft. Table. Seconded and passed.
Sylvia
1:00 PM Tour of building and rooms in preparation for Spring Fling
Meeting adjourned 1:30 PM
Respectfully submitted,
