Board Meeting Minutes - January 10, 2009

Present

Cony High School Library

Welcome and Introductions (Jeff Small) 

Asides:  Marilyn announced that ALA has recently published a position statement on the role of school libraries and a told of a new PowerPoint presentation from the Parent Advisory Committee that is available to educate parents on the role of library media specialists.


Secretary’s Report (Joyce Lucas)

Debbie made a motion to accept the secretary's report as amended (Edna's name in duplicate in Attendance, reword 2nd sentence under school consolidation discussion, Debbie not Deb), seconded by Nancy and the motion carried.


Treasurer’s Report (Donna Chale)
  • NESLA includes travel and memberships. 
  • $500 for conference scholarships but it does not appear on statement.  There was a membership deposit in December, there should be more.  There is more conference money coming. 
  • Donna had question about old financial reports.  What should we do with them? 
  • Peggy made a motion, Joyce seconded the motion and the motion carried to accept the treasurer's report as presented.

Job Descriptions (Jeff Small): 

Reminder to push your committee forward. 

Life Memberships
  • Nancy made a motion to honor Edna Comstock with a life membership. Peggy seconded the motion and the motion carried.  Jeff will make a certificate and give her a pin. 
  • Did we make a presentation for Administrator of the Year?  Teri did not receive a reply regarding when their conference was?  Teri will contact Debbie Averill.

Broke for lunch at 12:15  Will meet to work on conference handbook manual and Spring Fling ideas.

Reports from Working Groups

Conference Manual Working Group Report

Discussed the following conference goals and how we might meet them:
  • Mission:  The goal of the Maine Libraries Conference... 
  • Celebrating: Recognize excellence, energizing, sharing knowledge, networking
  • Support:  Educational, handbook, networking, contacts, physical stuff through vendors and colleagues
  • Strengthen: Workshops (knowlege & CEUs), validation, technology support, professional leadership opportunities
  • Possible Conference Committee positions: Vendor chair/exhibits chair, Treasurer/Secretary, PR chair, Registration, Hospitality/local arrangements, Speakers, Programs, Brochure Chair, Facility Chair
  • Have Wiki up which will be sent to everyone.  Nancy asked people to look at it and make changes.   

Spring Fling (Eileen Broderick):
  • Looking at May 9th at Cony titled "Yes We Can: The Role of the School Librarian in an economic crisis".  
  • Program ideas: panel of librarians and PEIs,  AASL Advocacy crisis kits, Literacy specialists and us, Technology (technology integrators, role for technology plans).  New regional testing? Action research – what is out there on Internet research/ how to do your own action research? Ask Janet about support staff—partnership Ed tech and Librarian.
  • Keynote: Legislative Update dealing with latest on RSUs, etc. Open  to public?   People sign up in advance. 
  • Pre-registration for sessions required.  Online registration
  • Choices – sign up for ; all go the keynote
  • Would need 40 people registered?
  • Lunch the only cost
  • Did talk about prizes—flip camera
Sylvia Norton's Report:

ALA - Meeting to gather information for Obama.  Will put forward things to keep connections.  Kelley asked if we might ask people at Spring Fling about attending AASL in the fall?  Discussed possibility of having a conference registration as a prize. 

Happy 40th Birthday Kelley!  Kelley shared her first 40 years with the group through photos and food that symbolized the major events in her life.
