What is MASL?
MASL, the Maine Association of School Libraries was formed in 1974. The organization is dedicated to promoting quality library media services in all Maine schools.
Membership offers you:
- SUPPORT in the form of curriculum materials
- A VOICE AND A VOTE in Association business
- REDUCED RATES at conferences and workshops
- NEWS of state, regional and national library media trends and events
- GUIDELINES to use in development of policies, program and facilities
- OPPORTUNITIES to share goals, challenges and successes with others working in the library profession
- ACCESS to leaders in the library media field who participate as conference speakers and workshop leaders
CO-SPONSORS the Maine Libraries Conference held in the Fall.
MASL supports the integration of learning experiences throughout the curriculum and the integration of new technologies into the learning environment
- OFFERS scholarships to MASL members who are pursuing careers in school librarianship.
- MASL believes that the Library Media Specialist and support staff play a unique role integrating information skills throughout the school's instructional program.
- PRODUCES exemplary materials which may be used in instruction and implementation of curriculum related information skills.
- MASL works in partnership with the Maine Library Association and the Maine State Library to improve libraries throughout the state.
- MONITORS state and national legislation relating to school and public libraries and offers support to appropriate legislation.
- MASL MLA and the MSL together insure that both school and public libraries are well informed about current issues pertinent to the library community.
- MASL, MLA and MSL work jointly to offer opportunities for communication among librarians and for meaningful continuing education.
- AWARDS the annual Walter J. Taranko Maine Library Media Specialist of the Year Award to an outstanding School Library Media Specialist.
- CREATES realistic and meaningful guidelines for implementing successful school library programs.
- MAINTAINS a web page with information about all of the above and with links to other relevant sites.
SPECIAL OFFER: Current MASL members who renew their membership for 09-10 (next year) before June 30th will be entered into a drawing for one of several possible options: a $500 scholarship to the American Association of School Libraries National Conference in Charlotte, NC in November, up to $500 reimbursement of expenses to next year’s NESLA Leadership Conference, $500 to purchase materials for your school library or $500 toward an other appropriate professional opportunity.
