MASL/MLA Intellectual Freedom Chair

The Intellectual Freedom Committee being a joint committee of the Maine Library Association and the Maine Association of School Libraries, the chairmanship of the committee alternates between representatives of the two parent organizations. The IFC chair's term of office is three years.

Duties of the Intellectual Freedom Committee Chair include:

1. Conducting IFC meetings on a regularly scheduled basis;

2. Preparing the agenda for IFC meetings;

3. Delegating responsibility to IFC members for such tasks as recording
minutes, keeping financial records, publishing the coalition news
letter, issuing press releases, planning and promoting, "Banned Books
Week" activities, preparing and presenting workshops, researching
reviews of challenged materials, coordinating IFC fund-raising
projects, and otherwise promoting intellectual freedom in Maine;

4. Submitting an annual budget to MLA and MASL for IFC activities;

5. Maintaining the archives of the IFC and the IFC’s file of reviews of
challenged materials;

6. Serving as the initial contact person for librarians, teachers and other
individuals seeking assistance in resisting censorship attempts;

7. Communicating with ALA’s Office of Intellectual Freedom regarding
IFC activities and censorship activity in Maine;

8. Holding an annual meeting of the Maine Intellectual Freedom
Coalition;

9. Appointing such Ad Hoc committees as may become necessary, i.e.,
Intellectual Freedom Award Nominating Committee;

10. Serving as a spokesperson for MASL and MLA on intellectual
freedom issues;

11. Preparing an annual report of IFC activities and progress in
achieving committee goals for the year.
