Press Release

Jan 2010 Board

Library at Lake Region High School - January 23, 2010

The library at Lake Region High School was a hive of activity on Saturday, January 23rd. Library Media Specialist Debbie Gahm hosted the monthly Board meeting of the Maine Association of School Libraries (MASL). Over 30 library personnel traveled from Presque Isle to York and place in between to attend this important meeting. The highlight was the unveiling and beginning distribution of the Maine School Librarian Handbook. This is a complete re-write of the original handbook that was created in 1984.

Gahm chaired the committee of thirteen and used email correspondence to draft and finalize the 350+ page handbook. The Printery in Bridgton was responsible for the printing of the binder, the contents and the tab dividers. Students in the Lake Region Vocational Center's Diversified
Occupations class traveled to the Printery for two days and placed the contents of the binder (printed chapters and dividers) into each binder.

The 750 Maine School Librarian Handbooks will be distributed at no cost to all schools (public and private) in the State of Maine. A letter will be sent to school principals informing them of this delivery. They are encouraged to meet with the library staff to discuss the importance of the library program in their school(s). The handbook will also be available on the MASL webpage (above) so updates and additions can be readily accessible. MASL is a non-profit organization, so grants are being sought to offset the approximate cost of $17,000. All attendees of the meeting at LRHS left with boxes of Handbooks and a list of schools for distribution. A great time was had by all.
