ARCHIVES CHAIR
Shall perform the duties pertaining to their respective office and such other duties as may be approved by the Executive Board.
The Archives Chair shall:
1. Collect and organize all materials of historic interest relating to the Association.
2. Arrange for preservation and safe storage of archival materials.
3. Provide information or copies of archival material as requested.
4. Submit an annual budget, goals, and an annual report.
AT-LARGE MEMBER
Shall perform the duties pertaining to their respective office and such other duties as may be approved by the Executive Board.
The At-Large Member(s) shall:
1. Represent concerns of the membership to the Executive Board.
2. Assist the Second Vice President in Planning and organizing fall conference.
3. Submit an annual budget, goals, and an annual report.
4. An At-Large member will keep track of potential grant sources and will regularly publicize these in The Maine Entry.
CERTIFICATION CHAIR
Shall perform the duties pertaining to their respective office and such other duties as may be approved by the Executive Board.
The Certification Chair shall:
1. Monitor the status of state certification requirements and keep the membership informed.
2. Work with the Department of Education on revisions of certification requirements.
3. Submit an annual budget, goals, and an annual report.
CONTINUING EDUCATION CHAIR
Shall perform the duties pertaining to their respective office and such other duties as may be approved by the Executive Board.
The Continuing Education Chair shall:
1. Monitor existing opportunities for continuing education and keep the membership informed.
2. Work with the State School Library Consultants on development of educational opportunities for library media specialists.
3. Submit an annual budget, goals, and an annual report.
FACILITIES CHAIR
Shall perform the duties pertaining to their respective office and such other duties as may be approved by the Executive Board.
The Facilities Chair shall:
1. Keep MASL members aware of new developments in the area of facilities which may have applications in education and in the library media center.
2. Act as a liaison between MASL and other professional organizations on issues relating to library media center facilities.
3. Maintain, revise, and keep up-to-date the facilities requirements recommended in Maine School Library Media Programs.
4. Research topics relating facilities design, planning,
upgrading, and maintenance to library media center utilization.
5. Submit an annual budget, goals, and an annual report
INFORMATION SKILLS CHAIR
The Information Skills Chair Shall:
1. Develop and promote educational and informational programs and articles about information skills to librarians, teachers, administrators, school boards, educational consultants, the state school board, and other relevant groups.
2. Review annually and revise as needed Maine Information Skills Guidelines for Educators.
3. Submit an annual budget, goals, and an annual report.
INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM CHAIR
Shall perform the duties pertaining to their respective office and such other duties as may be approved by the Executive Board.
The Intellectual Freedom Chair shall:
1. Serve on the MASL/MLA Intellectual Freedom Committee, assuming chair position of the joint committee during MASL's
3-year alternating term. (see Section 4 C1)
2. Monitor and communicate to the membership current intellectual freedom issues and challenges.
3. Assist the membership in dealing with censorship issues.
4. Assume leadership in promoting intellectual freedom.
LEGISLATIVE CHAIR
Shall perform the duties pertaining to their respective office and such other duties as may be approved by the Executive Board.
The Legislative Chair shall:
1. Monitor pending library legislation and keep the membership informed.
2. Organize appropriate response to proposed legislation when necessary.
3. Coordinate legislative response and activities with the Maine Library Association, The Maine State Library, and other organizations when appropriate.
4. Submit an annual budget, goals, and an annual report.
MEMBERSHIP CHAIR
Shall perform the duties pertaining to their respective office and such other duties as may be approved by the Executive Board.
The Membership Chair shall:
1. Publish membership information and application forms (in various formats) and develop strategies to maintain and increase membership.
2. Receive dues, provide membership cards and forward monies to the Treasurer in a timely fashion.
3. Assess membership costs in relation to services provided.
4. Maintain an up-to-date membership list.
5. Maintain retirement statistics and submit names eligible for honorary lifetime membership.
6. Submit an annual budget, goals, and an annual report.
NEWSLETTER CHAIR
Shall perform the duties pertaining to his/her respective office and such other duties as may be approved by the Executive Board.
The Newsletter chair shall:
1. Serve as editor of the quarterly publication of the Association (The Maine Entry).
2. Solicit advertising to help underwrite costs for the Association publication.
3. Submit an annual budget, goals and an annual report.
PUBLIC RELATIONS CHAIR
Shall perform the duties pertaining to his/her respective office and such other duties as may be approved by the Executive Board.
The Public Relations Chair shall:
1. Submit news releases about MASL activities and conferences to the media and professional publications.
2. Promote development of strong public relations within the profession.
3. Maintain and update the School Librarians Handbook annually.
4. Submit an annual budget, goals, and an annual report.
STANDARDS CHAIR
Shall perform the duties pertaining to his/her respective office and such other duties as may be approved by the Executive Board.
The Standards Chair shall:
1. Review annually and revise as needed the Maine School Library Media Programs.
2. Publicize and promote the use of Maine School Library Media Programs.
3. Submit an annual budget, goals, and an annual report.
TECHNOLOGY CHAIR
Shall perform the duties pertaining to his/her respective office and such other duties as may be approved by the Executive Board.
The Technology Chair shall:
1. Keep the Executive Board and membership informed of new and emerging technologies which may have application in education and library media centers.
2. Act as a liaison between MASL and other professional organizations on issues of instructional technology.
3. Research topics relating technology to library media center utilization.
4. Submit an annual budget, goals, and an annual report.
MASL/MLA INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM CHAIR [Section C1]
The Intellectual Freedom Committee being a joint committee of the Maine Library Association and the Maine Association of School Libraries, the chairmanship of the committee alternates between representatives of the two parent organizations. The IFC chair's term of office is three years.
Duties of the Intellectual Freedom Committee Chair include:
1. Conducting IFC meetings on a regularly scheduled basis;
2. Preparing the agenda for IFC meetings;
3. Delegating responsibility to IFC members for such tasks as recording minutes, keeping financial records, publishing the coalition news letter, issuing press releases, planning and promoting, Banned Books Week activities, preparing and presenting workshops, researching reviews of challenged materials, coordinating IFC fund-raising projects, and otherwise promoting intellectual freedom in Maine;
4. Submitting an annual budget to MLA and MASL for IFC activities;
5. Maintaining the archives of the IFC and the IFCs file of reviews of challenged materials;
6. Serving as the initial contact person for librarians, teachers and other individuals seeking assistance in resisting censorship
attempts;
7. Communicating with ALAs Office of Intellectual Freedom regarding IFC activities and censorship activity in Maine;
8. Holding an annual meeting of the Maine Intellectual Freedom Coalition;
9. Appointing such Ad Hoc committees as may become necessary, i.e., Intellectual Freedom Award Nominating Committee;
10. Serving as a spokesperson for MASL and MLA on intellectual freedom issues;
11. Preparing an annual report of IFC activities and progress in achieving committee goals for the year.
