Jan BretonThe Maine Association of School Libraries (MASL) named Jan Breton, Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment for the Westbrook School System, as the 2005 recipient of the Library Media Service Award for Administrators. Announcing the award on October 23 at the annual Maine Libraries Conference in Augusta, Nancy Grant, representing the MASL Board, noted Breton's support for Westbrook’s school libraries and her role in developing plans for collection development and curriculum instruction. A plaque noting Breton’s accomplishments and a $500 donation to the district's school libraries will be awarded in a local ceremony at a later date. Submitting Breton’s nomination, Patricia Brasslow, Library Media Specialist in Westbrook, lauded not only Breton’s 3 year Library and Media Resources Replacement Plan but also her success in finding grant funds to support the plan. Additionally, Brasslow lauded Breton's commitment to helping students become life long learners by providing them with the opportunity to develop information literacy skills through the library curriculum and in the wider school setting. In a letter of support for the nomination, Deborah Locke, Westbrook High School Librarian, wrote "Her recognition of the core role of strong school libraries in supporting literacy and academic success for students has resulted in significant gains for our libraries' collections and programs." The award is given annually by The Maine Association of School Libraries (MASL) to a school administrator currently employed in the state of Maine. The award honors an administrator who through individual leadership and sustained effort has made worthy contributions to the operation of effective school media services. |
