Board Meeting Minutes: November 7, 1999

Fall Conference, Messalonskee High School

Business meeting started at 8:55.
1. Secretary's print report from the May 19 Spring Conference meeting accepted.

2. Treasurer's October 1998 report: Income $480.00, Expenses $568.56, Checking account $10,230.36, MASL CD $10,752.44, Savings (Scholarship) $2,98076, Scholarship CD $18,027.00. Scholarship CD now earning enough to pay for scholarships.

3. Name change: winning vote by membership is for MASL (Maine Association of School Libraries). Logo and Public Relations for new name will be on Dec. Board agenda. PR needs focus on awareness of what the Library includes.

4. Scholarship committee, Gretchen Asam reports raffle inefficient, focus for 99 Spring Conference will be silent auction. Requests something from every Maine library. Suggestion to include a form of Chinese auction for some items.

5. Conference committee, Suzan Nelson reports dates are May 16-17-18, program forms ready, Gretchen Asam and Joyce Bell are program co-chairs, requests more programs suggestions (joyce_bell@capehs.cape.k12.me.us )  or (rickasam@mfx.net)

6. Legislative committee, Ann Carabia reports Circuit Rider money is secured for the three jobs starting in January, PUC being requested to investigate affordable phone lines for libraries especially with May 2000 being the end of the MSLN free access, surveys coming on needs for 50 T1 lines and 384 lines, reopened LD 828 (Universal fund) to decide how to get monies collected for covering Internet access lines, contract agreed upon with URSUS company for Maine Info Net, watch for Karl's Maine Info Net information early 1999, Interlibrary loan information  due out soon, Bond issue makes Maine Info Net free for first year, later costs will depends upon how many libraries join package, Cultural Initiative is a package budget from Maine's cultural agencies (including State Library) and will include development monies for both school and public library use.

7. Web page committee reports web page waiting for name change information, will investigate MASL domain name, trial site at www.thornton.saca.org/98/index.html, need to send information to Sylvia for inclusion on web site.

8. Information Literacy committee, Audrey Conant reports on meeting to start revision process for Maine's curriculum immediately after Fall Conference, AASL Info Power web site with library activities matched to new standards  www.ala.org/aasl/

Request made to add MELibs listserv directions to Maine Entry.
