Reports:
1. Walter Taranko (E-rate): cut 1/2, Telcom and ATM services still on, wiring and file servers in trouble unless applications in 75 day window and district at 70%+ discount, new applications in fall, check State Library web page for latest information on e-rate. PUC: Working on circuit rider concept details, plans for one rider per library district, plus one central office staff, Sharon Treat helpful in PUC testimony, bandwidth is still an issue.
(Jobs): twenty ed tech positions have changed to professional.
2. Conferences.
Fall: Awareness of Information Power, specifics of and strategies on how to get started using. To be at Messalonskee High School. $20 with light brunch, Nov. 7, 8:30-12:30.
Spring: 1998 turned over $6,000 to MEMA treasury, attended by about 135 of the 218 MEMA members, 145 of the about 1000 MLA members. 1999 will be "Balancing our Books: Making Libraries Count". Program chairs needed now. The conference will still be at Orono (Bowdoin not ready yet), next meeting Oct. 3. MLA wishes to drop raffle due to costs, Motion carried by MEMA to drop raffle.
3. Budget
Summer income $140.00, expenses $732.35. 97/98 YTD income $10,039.00, expenses $10,450.27. Discussion on need to increase membership. Motion carried for financial support for James McCampbell Award, still to be given by Maine Principals Association.
4. Information Literacy
ALA workshop attendance by Sylvia, student achievement is bottom line, 5 year plan of advocacy to get implemented in each state, each Information standard fits in with curriculum area standards, all work done in collaboration with teachers.
Curriculum 1990 will be updated to mesh with Information Power and Maine's Learning Results, suggestions by LMS welcome. Springboard is still available to MEMA members.
5. MLA retreat
Sylvia and Suzan attended, legislative sharing costs discussed, suggested that MEMA confer with MLA before deciding how much to fund for legislative committee, also see what MEA is doing for library educators. There are about 260 public libraries and about 500 school libraries (250 staffed by professionals) Elizabeth reported on three goals of MLA 1). Membership growth, 2). Possible restructuring, 3). Standards updates. Would like to identify common sites for shared technology workshops.
6. Standards committee
Meeting will be planned, trying to have facilities, job description & evaluation in single packet, support staff job description and evaluation needs work, Sharon will be helping with this.
7. Web page
Outline is up on Thornton server (www.thornton.saco.org/mema/intfree.html), Lynn McHatten planning meeting for future work, Gail offered to do posting, needs information in ASCII file or cut/paste in e-mail.
8. Name change
Spring conference meeting attendees felt strong about using the words school, libraries, and Maine in the new name. Discussion included the need for the concepts of the changing library role: information, technology and teaching.
Ballot will be mailed to members, with return date one week later, new name will be announced at Fall conference. Ballot to include history of name and choices:

9. Misc.
- Opening for NEEMA representative on MEMA Board. Frances Alley is Continuing Ed chair.
- Gail Garthwait's office phone at Fogler is 581-1685, Nutrition and Dental Health parts of the Health curriculum have been moved from Farmington to Fogler and no courtesy card needed to check out, call 1-888-848-1685.
- Oct. 17 NEEMA Leadership conference focuses on Information Power.
- Suggest video taping of award winning libraries.
- Sally Leahy finished the summer courses at Rhode island with A's.
- Oct. 22-25 Transformation of Learning through Technology conference at Camden, $495 for educators, full scholarships for Maine educators, call Linda Lord.
