Board Meeting Minutes: March 9, 2007

Present:  Edna Comstock, Janet Patterson, Lorie Kentara, Sue Leiter, Sylvia Norton, Jeff Small, Joyce Lucas, Pam Bonney.

 Jeff Small (filling in for President,Teri Caouette) called the meeting to order at 9:25 AM.  Welcome and introductions.

 Secretary's Report:  The minutes of the February meeting were accepted as presented.

Treasurer's Report: The treasurer's report was accepted as presentedJeff stated that  MASL is on target for projected expenses, and membership is coming back up. He emphasized the need to continue with branding products, such as the MASL wine, and discussed the possibility of having maple syrup with the conference logo on it.  This could be given to toward scholarship auction, to ALA reps, etc.  Jeff will look into getting maple syrup (smaller bottles) with a MASL label as well that could be given to school principals. Edna agreed to look at membership fees in other states, as we may need to consider an increase in the future. 

Conference: Edna reported that the Conference committee met on Friday March 8.  The committee has found a conference photographer, and Sarah Sugden from Waterville Public Library will be the program chair.  At this meeting, MASL shared their vendor policy plan.  They are also dealing with the issue of core committees or subgroups: conference (auction, information, bookstores, etc.), Association groups, and Supportive groups such as Maine Student Book Award.  They also discussed having a conference partner category that might include the Holocaust Human Rights Center and the Maine State Library, groups that do more than is normally expected.  Their next meeting date is April 28 following the MASL meeting in Rumford.  There will be no conference meeting in May.  June 8 they will meet in Belfast following the MLA meeting.  Also discussed changing the conference days in the future.

Teri sent word that she needs the names of those going to Affiliate Assembly.

School Consolidation Plan:  Jeff commended Sylvia for all of her work and talent in producing a position statement to address concerns about school libraries.  The board worked to revise/edit the position statement.

Joint Library Committee Meetings:  Jeff, Teri, Peggy and Sylvia attended the meeting.  Jeff reported that Mike Saxl gave advise on contacting legislators.

Summer Retreat:  There has been no word from MLA on the joint retreat yet.  Sue Leiter will send a calendar to Jeff giving dates that work for her.  The board will give Sue dates by the April 28 meeting.

Other

  • Edna stated that Brenda Hogate at Cornville Elementary School is willing to host a MASL meeting,
  • Jeff asked Edna to email people to look at the position statement.  We will need a mailing list plan from Teri.  Jeff recommended that we have it done and in the mail by Tuesday, March 22.  We will need to walk the letters to legislators.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:30 PM.

Next meeting:  April 28th in Rumford.  There will be no meeting in May.  MASL will meet on June 2 at the Maine Sate Library.
