Board Meeting Minutes: February 6, 1999

Present: Francie Aley, Gretchen Asam, Tamara Blesh, Donna Chale, Audrey Conant, Gail Garthwait, Nancy Grant, Linda Hazard, Lynn McHatten, Suzan Nelson, Sylvia Norton, Betty Pettis, Walt Taranko Maine State Library

Secretary's report approved (with one spelling error corrected).

Treasurer's report: December income $1,410.00, expenses $168.41, Checking account $8,484.36. January income 0, expenses $400.00, checking account $8084.36.

Committee reports
1.  Spring Conference:,Suzan: conference program write-ups needed now,  listserv requests for programs have gotten responses.

2. Scholarship, Gretchen: current scholarship possibilities are publicized, form for auction donations will be on MASL and MLA web sites.

3. Web page, Gail: URL is http://www.MASLibraries.org , still editing and please give suggestions, send information to add to Gail (copy & paste in e-mail) Web Manager, Warning for your own web sites: check links often to avoid problems with misuse of old link addresses. Warn e-mail users not to forward chain letters as it clogs the Internet, use photo finder in Alta Vista for image searching.

4. Information Literacy, Audrey: Project 2000 (revision of 1990 curriculum) planning for web site, monies for publication may be needed for web site development help, will include a file of Best Practices similar to ELM site, question on MeLibs shows need to focus on collaboration between librarians and teachers, possible spring conference program on topic?, Recommend a "teaser" flyer about Springboard &endash; Nancy and Lynn will do, Dot Gregory working on list of MASL and MLA publications, presentation at spring conference about Springboard?

5. Standards, Linda: Revision in the works, collecting other state's standards for comparison.

6. By-laws, Gretchen: Bylaws out-of-date, will get current changes from Secretary and Archivist for up-dating help.

7. State Board of Education, Tamara: Essential Resources report discussion, report may affect some schools adversely, motion carried to write MASL letter to State Board about the librarians concerns, Sylvia will do with Walter, Nancy will send examples of smaller schools concerns.  State Board discussions included block scheduling and long distance learning over ATM with needs for staff development.

8. Public Relations, Lynn: Logo needed now, everyone bring suggestions next meeting for discussion, Lynn will check with ALA about modifying reader symbol, possible contest among Art teachers for PR

President's report, Sylvia:
a. Check Barbara McDade's MeLibs Feb 5 message for Legislative update on LD 499, LD 630, LD 689, and LR 1142, also information about March 16 as the State Legislative Day.
b.  California's new "check it out" for evaluating school librarians, phone 1-800-995-4099 for current price and shipping.
c. ALA's listserv for Information Power shows most states not doing much yet.
d. ACTEM may send a representative to MASL's March or April Board meeting, to start collaborative efforts rolling.
e. Maine Entry corrections noted &endash; MASL is Libraries, not Librarians.
f. James McCampbell Award information mailed, Winnebago and Library Media of Year next.

Walt's e-rate report: E-rate funds 50% finished, currently working in the 70% discount rate area, POTS/long distance/ATM still being covered, Wiring/servers/hubs being dropped,  April 6 is current deadline for next e-rate requests, filters not required yet.

Note from Linda Hazard: Suggest that teacher/librarian teams apply to go to D.C. with $1,000 each to develop model teaching materials around the AMERICAN MEMORY COLLECTIONS of the Library of Congress. (dates--July 18 to July 23, 99) The collections are at http://memory.loc.gov

Next meeting March 6 at Gardner High School, April meeting will be April 10
(not April 3, due to Easter weekend).
